Education Reform: What Needs to Change for Our Kids to Thrive
Raising children who can think, adapt, and lead in a changing world
There are certain conversations that sit on your heart for years before you’re ready to fully unpack them.
This is one of those for me.
As both an educator and a mom, I’ve spent years observing, researching, and experiencing different learning environments—public school, private school, and homeschooling. And across all of them, one truth keeps rising to the surface:
Something about the way we’re educating our kids isn’t working.
Not because teachers don’t care. Not because parents aren’t involved. But because the system itself was built for a world that no longer exists.
And our kids are feeling that disconnect.
We’re Using an Old System for a New World
When you look at the history of education, it makes sense why things are the way they are.
The system was designed during the Industrial Revolution—a time when the goal was to create efficient, compliant workers who could follow instructions, stay on schedule, and contribute to a factory-style workforce.
And so we built schools that reflected that:
Bells to signal transitions
Rows to create uniformity
Standardized curriculum for the masses
But here’s the problem…
We’re no longer raising factory workers.
We’re raising kids in a world driven by innovation, creativity, technology, and problem-solving. And yet, many classrooms still prioritize memorization over mastery and compliance over curiosity.
It’s no wonder so many kids feel disengaged.
They’re not broken.
The system just hasn’t caught up.
When Learning Becomes About the Test, We Lose the Purpose
If you think back to your own school experience, you probably remember what it felt like to prepare for a test.
You studied, crammed, memorized…
took the test…
and then let it all go.
That’s because most of what we were taught wasn’t connected to real life—it was connected to performance.
And that’s still happening today.
Our kids are often learning for the next grade, the next test, the next benchmark…
instead of learning for life.
But what if we flipped that?
What if the goal wasn’t just to “get through school,” but to actually develop skills that carry into adulthood?
“Learning not for school, but for life.”
That single shift in perspective changes everything.
Because when learning becomes meaningful, it becomes memorable.
Curiosity Is the Missing Piece
One of the most beautiful things about children is their natural curiosity.
They ask questions.
They explore.
They want to understand how things work.
But over time, that curiosity often fades—not because they stop caring, but because the environment around them stops nurturing it.
When learning becomes:
Highly structured
Performance-driven
Focused on right vs. wrong
Curiosity gets replaced with pressure.
And instead of asking, “Why does this happen?”
kids begin asking, “Is this going to be on the test?”
That shift is subtle… but it’s powerful.
Because curiosity is what fuels lifelong learning.
And once it’s gone, learning starts to feel like a chore instead of a privilege.
What Changes When Kids Have Ownership
One of the most transformative shifts we can make is giving kids more ownership over their learning.
When children have a voice—when they’re invited into the process—something changes.
They begin to care more.
Engage more.
Think more deeply.
Because now, learning isn’t something being done to them…
it’s something they’re actively part of.
Even small changes can make a big difference:
Letting them help choose a topic
Inviting their input on how they learn best
Asking what they’re curious about
These moments build confidence and motivation in ways that worksheets and lectures never will.
Because ownership creates connection.
And connection leads to growth.
We Can’t Ignore the World They’re Growing Up In
Our kids are growing up in a digital world.
They have access to information instantly.
They’re used to interaction, feedback, and engagement.
They are, quite literally, wired differently than we were.
And while technology absolutely comes with challenges, it also presents opportunities.
The goal isn’t to eliminate it.
The goal is to teach our kids how to use it wisely.
Because when used well, technology can:
Enhance learning
Increase engagement
Spark creativity
Provide real-time feedback
The key is guidance.
Without it, kids become passive consumers.
With it, they become creators and critical thinkers.
Real Learning Happens When It’s Lived Out
One of the biggest shifts we can make as parents is moving from abstract learning to applied learning.
Because information alone doesn’t stick—but experience does.
Instead of just reading about something, what if we helped our kids live it out?
Practice language in real conversations
Explore science in nature
Connect lessons to everyday life
These moments don’t just teach—they transform.
They help kids see that learning isn’t confined to a classroom.
It’s part of how we experience the world.
The Goal Was Never the System
At the end of the day, this conversation isn’t about choosing the “perfect” school.
It’s about asking a better question:
Is the way my child is learning helping them thrive?
Because the goal was never to raise kids who simply fit into a system.
The goal is to raise kids who:
Think critically
Stay curious
Adapt to change
Solve real problems
Walk confidently in who they are
And here’s the good news:
You don’t have to overhaul everything to start moving in that direction.
Small, intentional shifts—at home, in conversations, in how you approach learning—can make a powerful difference.
A Final Thought for Parents
You have more influence than you think.
You don’t have to wait for the system to change in order to support your child differently.
You can:
Ask questions that spark curiosity
Create opportunities for real-world learning
Invite your child into the process
Encourage thinking, not just performance
Because education isn’t just what happens in a classroom.
It’s what happens in everyday moments.
And those moments are where your child learns not just what to know…
but how to think, grow, and thrive.
