Is Homeschooling Right for You?
A Practical, Honest Guide for Parents Exploring Their Options
Choosing how your child will be educated is not a small decision.
It’s emotional.
It’s personal.
It’s logistical.
And if you care deeply about your child’s love of learning, it can even bring you to tears.
As both an educator and a homeschooling mom, I want to approach this topic practically and honestly. Not with pressure. Not with hype. Not with research-heavy persuasion. But with lived experience.
Homeschooling is not for everyone.
But it may be for you.
If you are in a season of asking, “Could we do this?” here are some rhythms to consider—both the beautiful and the hard.
Five Life-Giving Rhythms of Homeschooling
1. Flexibility That Serves Your Family
Flexibility was our primary reason for homeschooling.
When your life includes high-level sports, travel, medical needs, unique learning rhythms, or simply a desire for slower mornings, flexibility becomes a gift.
Homeschooling allows you to:
Take breaks when focus is gone.
Do school anywhere (coffee shops, picnic blankets, libraries).
Travel without academic penalty.
Adjust pacing based on engagement.
If your family needs margin and adaptability, this may deeply matter to you.
Ask yourself:
Do we need educational flexibility to support our current season?
2. Leaning Into Academic Weakness Without Shame
One of the greatest gifts homeschooling has given our family is proximity.
When a child struggles academically, it isn’t brushed aside.
It isn’t lost in a classroom of 20+.
It isn’t forced through a rigid pacing guide.
It’s noticed.
Being close allowed me to recognize signs of dyslexia in my son. That awareness led to testing, partnership with professionals, and accommodations that genuinely support him.
Homeschooling doesn’t mean you have all the answers.
It means you have the space to slow down long enough to ask the right questions.
Ask yourself:
Do I want the ability to pause and personalize learning if my child struggles?
3. Slow Mornings and Togetherness
This may sound small—but it’s not.
Slow mornings matter.
Starting the day without rushing, yelling, or frantic energy shapes a child’s nervous system. It shapes connection. It builds safety.
There is something deeply bonding about:
Morning hugs
Shared lunches
Sitting outside with a notebook
Learning together instead of apart
Togetherness isn’t just about time. It’s about rhythm.
Ask yourself:
Am I craving a slower pace of family life?
4. Built-In Life Skills and Responsibility
When kids are home, they learn more than academics.
They learn:
Laundry systems
Cooking basics
Budget conversations
Teamwork
Responsibility for the home
Education doesn’t just happen in textbooks.
It happens when a nine-year-old learns to cook eggs on a Tuesday morning.
Ask yourself:
Do I want education to include real-life skills organically woven into the day?
5. Focusing on What Truly Matters
Traditional school often includes material that may not align with your family's values or priorities.
Homeschooling allows you to:
Remove unnecessary “fluff”
Lean into curiosity-driven questions
Follow rabbit trails of interest
Choose content intentionally
You decide what deserves brain space.
Ask yourself:
Do I want more intentional control over what shapes my child’s thinking?
